Make time for yourself

Study for 50 minutes. Make room for ten off.

Use a longer session for a piece of reading, a draft, or a set of study exercises. The 50/10 rhythm gives you a clear point to step away; an existing running or paused session is kept until you choose to replace it.

How to use a 50/10 session

Choose your task and press Start focusing. When fifty minutes are complete, press Start short break when you are ready. After the break, start your next focus yourself. There is no automatic restart.

Plan a useful stopping point

Before you begin, decide what progress would look like: an outline, one section of a project, or a topic reviewed. At the end, write down your next step and leave the work ready for your return. You do not have to fill the whole session if you finish early.

Set up the room

Fifty minutes is long enough that your surroundings matter. Open a room such as Night Rain or Manhattan Midnight to put a calm scene behind the countdown, or use the Study With Me page for the same 50/10 rhythm in a quiet room. Turn on Keep screen on, where supported, so the display does not dim halfway through.

A few useful details

Is 50/10 the same as 25/5?

Both combine focus time with breaks. The Deep work preset uses 50 minutes of focus and ten off; the Classic preset uses 25 minutes of focus and five off. Neither needs to be your permanent setting. Choose the rhythm that suits the task.

When does the long break appear?

After every four completed focus phases, the timer offers a long break. This page sets that break to twenty minutes. Skipped phases do not count as completed focuses, and an existing saved focus count is kept.

Can I add sound to a 50 minute study timer?

Yes. Layer rain, fireplace, ocean, instrumental music, or white, pink or brown noise, each with its own volume. If you like the result, save it as a session with the 50/10 durations and relaunch it next time in one click.

Will the timer keep time if my laptop sleeps?

Yes. The countdown works from a fixed end time, so it shows the right remaining time when you return. Audio may stop while the device sleeps.

Find your rhythm.

A little structure, on your terms.
Choose a rhythm or make it your own.

Use whole minutes from 1 to 180. Take a long break after every four completed focuses. Each new phase waits for you to start it.

Changes apply to your next timer. A running or paused timer keeps its current duration.

How your timer works

Your timer and preferences stay in this browser. The countdown catches up after sleep; a backwards clock change pauses it. Completion sounds may be delayed or silenced while your device sleeps. Enable the chime in Sounds.

The chime has its own soft volume. Your device may silence it while asleep. Rain starts when you enter Night Rain or Darling Harbour. Layer sounds here or pause them individually. Audio gently softens at the end of a focus phase.
