Make time for yourself
Five minutes is the classic length of a Pomodoro short break, and a good size for a task you keep putting off. Decide what the five minutes are for, then press Start focusing.
Take a proper short break: stand up, drink some water, look away from the screen. Clear a micro-task: reply to one email, file the papers on your desk, book the appointment. Warm up before a longer session: skim yesterday’s notes, write down three things you want to get done, or try a few easy practice questions. Five minutes also suits a short stretch or a few quiet breaths.
Open Sounds and play one of five soft instrumental tracks, or layer rain, a crackling fireplace or ocean waves with it. There is also continuous white, pink or brown noise. Each layer has its own volume slider, and sound is separate from the timer, so you can play it with or without a countdown. Your browser needs a click before audio plays.
Five minutes is often spent waiting: for a meeting, for the kettle, for a class to settle. Open a room such as Night Rain or the Rainy Library and let the scene run while the countdown does its work. Choose Minimal or Hide controls if you want only the view and the time.
This page sets a five-minute focus, but you can use it however you like; the timer simply counts down and waits. A five-minute short break is also set, and it only starts if you press Start.
You choose. The five instrumental tracks are Rain at the Window, Warm Felt & Rainy Glass, Streetlights on Wet Roads, and two versions of Fading Sunlight. Nothing plays until you pick something.
Yes. The timer keeps correct time in a background tab or while your laptop sleeps. Audio may stop if the device sleeps, so keep the tab open and the device awake if you want the music to continue.
