Make time for yourself

A study timer that fits the task.

Start with a small, clear goal: read a chapter, outline an essay, or practise a few questions. Choose a duration, or open the timer settings to enter your own focus and break lengths. It is a free online timer with no account and no sign-up.

From one minute to two hours

Short timers suit a reset or a small first step: one, two, three or five minutes. Ten to thirty minutes covers most reading and revision. Forty-five minutes to two hours leaves room for a long piece of writing, a lecture review or a practice paper. Each timer page sets the focus length for you, and Custom accepts any whole number of minutes from 1 to 180.

How the focus timer works

Press Start focusing and the countdown begins. When it ends, the timer waits. You choose when to start a short break, and every phase after that also waits for you to press Start. After four completed focus phases, a long break is offered; skipped phases do not count. Pause, Resume and Restart are always to hand, and the countdown keeps correct time even if the tab is in the background or your laptop sleeps.

Make the space your own

Add rain, a fireplace, ocean waves, soft instrumental music, or white, pink or brown noise, each with its own volume. Go fullscreen, turn on Keep screen on where your browser supports it, or switch between dark and light themes. When you find a combination you like, save it as a session and relaunch it in one click.

A few useful details

Can I set a custom timer?

Yes. Open Custom and enter whole minutes from 1 to 180 for focus, short break and long break. Changing settings does not alter a phase that is already running or paused; the new lengths apply to your next timer.

Will the study timer keep time in a background tab?

Yes. The countdown works from a fixed end time, so it stays correct if you switch tabs or your device sleeps. If you turn on the completion chime, a sleeping device may delay or silence it.

What happens to my timer if I open another page?

A running or paused timer comes with you. To replace it, use the new-timer button and confirm.

Do I need an account?

No. The timer is free and needs no sign-up. Your timer, preferences and saved sessions are kept in this browser only, so they will not follow you to another device.

Find your rhythm.

A little structure, on your terms.
Choose a rhythm or make it your own.

Use whole minutes from 1 to 180. Take a long break after every four completed focuses. Each new phase waits for you to start it.

Changes apply to your next timer. A running or paused timer keeps its current duration.

How your timer works

Your timer and preferences stay in this browser. The countdown catches up after sleep; a backwards clock change pauses it. Completion sounds may be delayed or silenced while your device sleeps. Enable the chime in Sounds.

The chime has its own soft volume. Your device may silence it while asleep. Rain starts when you enter Night Rain or Darling Harbour. Layer sounds here or pause them individually. Audio gently softens at the end of a focus phase.
